Community Workshop: Seed Saving

July 29, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Free

Learn the basics of seeds from the plant’s perspective! Where do seeds come from, what do they do, and why? If you’ve ever grown or saved seeds, or considered it, this will be an exciting opportunity to encounter some plant strategies for reproduction. We will start with how seeds are fertilized, and learn about the hard work that plants put into their seeds. We’ll also consider how the different ways plants make seeds challenge us to work with them and our communities as we make choices about what seeds to grow next year.

This workshop will be between 30-45 minutes, and include several demonstrations and samples to examine under a microscope. After the talk, those who are interested can come see some of the bean varieties Allen Centennial Garden and Occupy Madison are growing for the Roughwood Seed Collection. Their growing space is a part of Troy Farm, about a 10-minute walk north of the Troy community garden.
