TROY Farm

Proud to be one of Madison’s oldest organic urban farms

About Troy Farm

Troy Farm is a program of Rooted that focuses on providing land access and support to beginning and BIPOC farmers and other community organizations through the Troy Farm Collaborative, growing organic produce for low income communities on the Northside through the Purpose Grown Project, and hosting public events for the community like Pizza Nights and the annual Plant Sale. Troy Farm is located on a beautiful 26 acre property that includes the Troy Kids’ Garden, Troy Community Gardens, walking trails, a restored prairie, and forested areas.

Troy Farm started in 2001 as a demonstration farm on City of Madison land that was slated to be developed into housing. Local neighbors, gardeners, non profit organizations, and UW Madison folks teamed up to convince the city to set the land at Troy aside to preserve green space, offer a place to to grow food, and provide educational opportunities to the public. The property is now owned by the Madison Area Community Land Trust and managed by Rooted.

Watch this space! We’ll be updating this page with more information about Troy Farm soon.

Join Troy Farm

The majority of the food we grow enters the community through our farm membership program. Summer Troy Farm Members join the farm in the spring and receive fresh organic produce throughout the primary growing season (June – October). Fall Troy Farm Members join the farm in late summer and receive 5 pre-packed boxes during the late fall growing season (late October – December). In addition to fresh, USDA Certified Organic produce grown in our urban farm, members have access to our u-pick flower garden, bulk purchasing, and the weekly Troy Farm newsletter.

Every Summer Troy Farm Member receives a Square gift card that has been loaded with your balance on it. You’ll be given your card at your first farm stand visit of the year. When you purchase your veggies at the farm stand, we’ll swipe your card and that week’s purchase will be deducted from your balance. To check your balance, you can scan the QR code on the back of your card with a smartphone or you can do the following:
  • Click the button below.
  • Enter your 16-digit gift card number and 4-digit PIN found on the back of your card.
  • If your card has a 4-digit PIN but the check balance feature does not work, you will be prompted to contact the Square seller ([email protected]) to check your balance. Just send us an email and we’ll help you out.

Yes! Troy Farm accepts SNAP and WIC benefits. Additionally, all SNAP benefits are eligible for the Double Dollars Program (while funds are available).

Individuals and families who sign up for membership commit to the farm for the growing season. This helps us cover the initial annual costs of the farm operation and helps us plan our production. In return, members will receive fresh organic produce throughout the harvest season (June–October for summer memberships; October–December fall memberships), have access to the u-pick flower garden (summer members only), and support our mission to increase access to land-based education and fresh food for all of our neighbors. If you live in the community, we want to be your farmers!

Summer Troy Farm Members choose a credit amount for their membership. Come June and throughout the harvest season, you spend that credit at the Troy Farm Stand or at our booth at the Northside Farmers’ Market. You select what you want, when you want it, and you support our efforts to improve access to fresh food and land-based education for all of our neighbors.

Affordable Farm Membership: Income eligible members receive up to 75% discount off of farm membership. We accept SNAP benefits/Quest card for payment.

Our Fall Troy Farm Membership is more like a traditional CSA program. Members receive 5 pre-packed boxes available for pickup at Troy Farm every other Thursday from late-October until mid-December. Each box has about 8-10 types of veggies, including a mix of cooking greens, fresh greens, root veggies, and storage vegetables. Membership is open for fall 2023, so sign up today!

Farm memberships may be eligible for HMO rebate and payment plans are available to all members. For more information, visit the Fairshare CSA Coalition.

Joining Troy Farm supports food access for Madison residents. We are the only local farm to provide up to 75% off the price of farm membership to income limited families. Your standard price membership fee helps us provide discounted memberships through our Food Access Initiative. You can also donate directly to the Food Access Fund when you sign up for membership.

Thank you to our partners at the Fairshare CSA Coalition for helping us fund and promote this important program.

A worker share volunteer helps the farm in the field or at our markets, and gets a free membership in return. Troy Farm offers a number of different worker shares. You can learn more and apply here.

On Thursdays starting in mid-June, meals prepared by local chefs featuring Troy Farm veggies are available for purchase during the farm stand. Prices and menus will vary from week to week, so be sure to check the Rooted events calendar and our social media pages for details. Many weeks, we will also have live music and activities. Rooted Land Acknowledgement -
Troy Farm and Gardens

The land we tend is the ancestral home of the Ho-Chunk people, who remain here to this very day despite the federal policies and military efforts to remove them. Their rich oral tradition speaks volumes for their strength, wisdom, and adaptability to climate change, sickness, war, and westernization. Though the regional landscape has changed, the Ho-Chunk continue to celebrate elements of their traditional way of life. Their songs, stories, language, and kinship remain intact; their foods which have survived represent the ongoing legacy of historic sustenance. For this, we honor the Ho-Chunk people who have cared for this earth with kindness, thankfulness, ecological knowledge, and seventh-generation thinking. Rooted is committed to honoring this legacy at Troy Farm and Gardens and working together with the Ho-Chunk people on shared goals of equity and justice.

We express our gratitude to Ho-Chunk Nation President Jon Greendeer for his guidance in assisting Rooted with this acknowledgment.
